- SOWBUGS -
Latin Name: Genus Oniscus
Length: 0.25-0.5 in
Color: Gray
Sounds: ---
Digestive Tract: Yes
PEST OVERVIEW
Sowbugs look similar to pillbugs and have oval
bodies that are flattened and have two small
appendages in the rear that look like tails.
Sowbugs cannot roll up like pillbugs do when
they are disturbed. They commonly found
under mulch in flowerbeds, as the eat decaying
plants and organic debris.
Sowbugs need moisture to survive, so they can
be found indoors in damp garages, basements,
crawl spaces and cellars. Outside, they seek
shelter in the soil, under rocks, flowerpots, trash
cans, and logs. They are more active at night.
WHY DO I HAVE THEM?
If the presence of sowbugs are in your home, it
is an indication high moisture conditions. High
moisture conditions also contribute to favorable
breeding conditions for other insects, wood rot,
and mildew. Pay attention to the moisture and
humidity levels in garages, basements, crawl
spaces, and cellars.
Sowbugs gain entry into homes through
ground-level doors, windows, and often sliding
glass doors. Using proper weather stripping on
doors and windows and eliminate moisture rich
materials outdoors to reduce the chance for
them to get indoors.
